EIT Food
Overview
EIT Food is Europe’s leading food innovation initiative, co-funded by the EU and bringing together businesses, researchers, startups and policymakers to shape a more sustainable and future-ready food system.
Operating across multiple countries and sectors, the organisation connects ideas, people and technologies to accelerate innovation — from early-stage concepts through to real-world impact.
Their work spans education, entrepreneurship, research and public engagement, making them a central hub within Europe’s food ecosystem.
The Brief
Over time, the EIT Food website had expanded significantly, reflecting the growth of the organisation and its activities. However, this growth had come at a cost.
The platform had become increasingly difficult to navigate and manage:
- content was spread across multiple sections without clear hierarchy
- users struggled to locate relevant information quickly
- internal teams faced challenges maintaining consistency
- the overall experience lacked clarity and direction
The site needed to be restructured to better support both user needs and internal workflows, without losing the depth of content that had been built over time.
The Process
We approached the project as a platform restructuring exercise, focusing on clarity, usability and long-term scalability.
Working closely with the EIT Food team, we began by analysing how different audiences interact with the site — including industry partners, startups, researchers and the general public.
From this, we established a clearer framework for how content should be organised and accessed.
Our priorities were to:
- simplify navigation across a large and complex content set
- create more intuitive pathways for different user groups
- improve consistency in how information is presented
- support internal teams in managing content more efficiently
The process began with a detailed UX and UI review, alongside a comprehensive audit of the existing content. We then restructured the site architecture to introduce a clearer hierarchy, redesigned the navigation to reduce friction and improve discoverability, mapped user journeys to ensure key content could be reached quickly and refined content groupings to make information easier to understand.
In parallel, we introduced a refreshed visual and editorial direction.
This included:
- a new image style to create a more cohesive visual identity
- a refined tone of voice to improve clarity and accessibility
- consistent formatting across content types
- clearer entry points into key sections and initiatives
The focus throughout was on making the platform feel more organised, without reducing its richness or depth.
The Result
The restructured platform provides a more coherent and accessible experience for both users and internal teams. The site now provides a clearer navigation system that supports content discovery, a more logical content structure across all sections, improved consistency in presentation and messaging, a refreshed visual identity aligned with the organisation’s purpose and a platform that is easier to manage and maintain.
Results & Impact
The improvements have made a measurable difference in how the platform is used and perceived.
- Easier access to information, reducing time spent searching for content
- Improved user engagement, with clearer pathways through the site
- Greater internal efficiency, simplifying content management processes
- Stronger alignment with organisational goals, supporting communication and outreach
- A scalable structure, capable of supporting future growth and new initiatives
Most importantly, the website now reflects the role EIT Food plays — acting as a connector across a complex network — while making that network easier to navigate and understand.
